RoomU: helping UC Davis students find a roommate they click with

A roommate-matching app built exclusively for UC Davis students with AggieWorks. RoomU is launching soon, and I’m sharing an early look while the project is still in progress.

Work in progress

This case study is still being written. RoomU is in active development, so for now I’m sharing the problem we’re solving and an early look at the product. I’ll add our research, design decisions, and final screens as we get closer to launch.

Overview

Finding a roommate shouldn’t come down to guesswork

Who you live with shapes your whole year at college, and it can be hard to tell who will be a good fit from a short post or a quick message. RoomU gives UC Davis students a dedicated place to get to know each other first. Detailed profiles, housing preferences, and lifestyle tags make compatibility easier to see, and when a match feels right, students can start a conversation right in the app.

Early look

How RoomU works

Here is a first look at two core moments in the app: telling RoomU how you live, and getting to know a potential roommate. Students can also filter profiles by the preferences that matter most to them, from guest policies to drinking habits. Both screens are still evolving as we test with students.

Lifestyle quiz

Matching on how you live
Students share habits such as smoking, drinking, guests, noise level, and sleep schedule, and RoomU uses those answers to suggest compatible roommates.

Quick, familiar inputs
Each question uses simple dropdowns and time pickers, so building a profile takes only a few minutes.

Profiles

Everything you need to decide
Each profile brings together a photo, budget, year and major, lifestyle tags, and a short introduction.

An easy way to say hello
A clear button invites students to start a conversation once a profile feels like a good fit.

More soon. As RoomU moves toward launch, I’ll share the research behind the lifestyle quiz, how we decided what belongs on a profile, and what we learn from students during beta testing.
